MORE than four million payday loan and home loan customers are urged to apply for any refunds that may be due to them.
If Provident, Greenwood, or Satsuma mis-sold you a loan, you may be able to receive compensation, even if you’ve already paid it off.
Some Provident and Greenwood doorstep loans, Satsuma payday loans and Glo guarantor loans were sold off to cash-strapped borrowers who couldn’t repay them.
Thousands of borrowers had their repayments canceled late last year after Provident closed its home loan business.
Lenders are now offering payments as part of a scheme to repay borrowers, even if they paid off their debts years ago.
Customers who sold loans at unaffordable rates have just weeks left to claim a share of a £50m compensation fund.
The claims window closes at the end of February, and it’s best to apply early.
This is what you need to know:
How much compensation could I get?
It is unlikely that you will recover as much as the company owes you, but it could still be in the hundreds.
And you can also remove bad scores from your credit history.
debt camel Blogger Sara Williams told The Sun: “The provident loans were only meant to be used for short-term loans – that’s why the interest rate was so high.”
“But Provident didn’t properly control borrowers. Hundreds of thousands of people continuously borrowed from Provident for years.
“They have a good chance of an ‘unaffordable loan’ claim being upheld, even if they made all payments on time.
“If you win, you’ll get back some of the interest you paid; it’s worth asking for.”
If you took out a Provident, Satsuma, Greenwood or Glo loan between April 6, 2007 and December 17, 2020, you may be eligible for a payment.
How much you get back will depend on how much you’ve borrowed and for how long, as well as how many others apply for a refund.
Cash will be distributed after the rebate program closes at 5:00 pm on February 28, 2022.
However, payment will not be immediate, as each claim will be assessed individually.
Where do I claim my refund?
If you think Provident, Satsuma, Greenwood, or Glo gave you an unaffordable loan, visit scheme.providentpersonalcredit.com.
You can file a claim online or by calling 08000 568 936, or you can download a form to submit.
Filing a claim is free.
But beware of claims administration companies that say they will do this on your behalf, as they will take a cut of any money you recover, and it’s easy to do it yourself anyway.
You will need a Scheme ID to submit your claim, which should have been sent to you by email or letter.
Call the number above if you don’t have this.
You won’t need details of your loan to claim, Sara says, but you may need to show evidence of defaults or county court judgments.
These will be on your credit report if it is within the last six years.
It is better to file a claim sooner rather than later, in case there is a problem submitting information close to the deadline.
What else should I take into account?
Sara also advises you to file a claim again if you were previously denied a refund or accepted a low amount.
This is because too many complaints were rejected by lenders earlier.
Your Claims Guide It also notes that you can file a claim whether you paid the loan on time, defaulted, or the loan was sold to a debt collector.
None of the four companies is currently lending to new clients.
If you are a former customer of The Money Shop, Payday UK or Payday Express, you could receive compensation today (14th January) or on Monday.
And if you think you may have been sold an unaffordable loan by one of the lenders still in business, here’s how to file an affordability complaint.
