South Africa must organize a Codesa-style economic model to fight inequality, poverty and unemployment, if not paying the price with an even greater revolt than the recent unrest.
This is according to former National Party chief negotiator Roelf Meyer, who said the best minds in the country must organize a rally similar to the Convention for Democratic South Africa to craft a new economic vision.
Meyer said the current economic model followed since 1994 has failed to meet the socio-economic conditions of the majority of the country, as it is a legacy of the apartheid past.
âLet’s be honest with ourselves, we have achieved a political transition, but the socio-economic transformation has not taken place. It’s now 27 years later, âhe said.
Meyer, who addressed the PSG Think Big Series webinars yesterday, said actors at the rally should include business, government, labor, civil society and political leaders, among others.
“We have to face the reality that it is the task of the president and the executive, but in the same way, it is the task of you and me as citizens of this country – otherwise we will pay. the price of what we have seen lately. weeks repeatedly in the future, âhe said.
Regarding the constitution, Meyer said that the fact that the country remains a âfunctioning democracyâ after the recent unrest has proven that âwe are in good shape, we are going in the right directionâ.
The supremacy of the South African constitution was demonstrated when Jacob Zuma and his administration were successfully challenged in the Constitutional Court almost every month.
Either way, the constitution has been the winner in terms of court arbitrations. He praised the Ramaphosa government for averting a Marikana massacre-like shootout against protesters in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
“I can imagine those behind what happened – the instigators would have loved this – the situation of a Marikana rehearsal,” Meyer said.
However, he expressed disappointment at the lack of intelligence.
