Former government officials have criticized the attack by the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) on the new economic model initiated by the government, Yeni Shafak reported.
Ex-politicians have characterized TUSIAD’s focus on the new economic model (based on production, employment and low-interest exports) as an obstacle to development moves initiated from time to time by the government. .
They said TUSIAD-led NGOs and the media targeted the government of Necmeddin Erbakan, who wanted to start a production movement in 1997.
Former Culture Minister Ismail Kahraman said Turkey’s development is immediately blocked and hindered whenever it begins to develop.
He added that the history of Turkey is full of such examples and that similar quests also exist today. On February 28, 1997, TUSIAD and other financial organizations supported the removal from power of former Prime Minister Erbakan, who tried to develop the national economy and they are still on the same quest today, Kahraman said .
Former Minister of State Teoman Riza Guneri pointed out that TUSIAD has taken a stand against governments and in favor of guardianship centers in all similar situations. The Erbakan government invented the pool system that day, and the need for domestic borrowing diminished. Thereupon TUSIAD became involved in an uprising against the government as its own interests disappeared, he added.
Erol Yarar, the former president of MUSAID (Association of Independent Industrialists and Entrepreneurs), pointed out that there is no difference between the attitude of TUSIAD on February 28 and that of TUSIAD today .
“At that time, they targeted Erbakan with discourses such as religiosity, Islamism and secularism. Today, instead of defending stability, they directly attack politics with political slogans. Look at the balance sheets of TUSIAD members over the past 20 years; they all grew 10 times. They owe this growth to political power,” Erol said.
Former MP Necmettin Aydin claimed that TUSIAD and the companies owned by its members are the extensions of international capital in Turkey. Turkey is a country that TUSIAD has ruled from behind the scenes for some time, he pointed out.
“Yesterday, with TUSIAD, the NGOs and the media of the time said that Erbakan had to fall no matter what, and they succeeded. That’s what we wanted to do to Tayyip Bey [Recep Tayyip Erdogan] today. Because Erdogan continues with an economic model based on production and exports, not on interest. We must not give an opportunity to centers that do not want the well-being and happiness of our people,” stressed businessman Mustafa Koca.
